A recent Swedish study, published in the Journal of Sex Research, has shown that women are more likely to use sex toys than men. When asked whether they used ‘objects’ when masturbating (i.e. sex toys) 43 per cent of women in the study said ‘sometimes’, compared to only 13 per cent of men.

So take a trip down history's masturbation lane...

Stone Age

It all began with the siltstone dildo - a multi-functional sex toy used 32,000 years ago that doubled up as a useful device for chipping flint.

51 B.C

In 51 B.C., legend has it that Cleopatra pleasured herself with a papyrus box full of live bees.

1890

If a woman was feeling blue or being ‘hysterical’ in the 16th century, she could head off to the doctor’s office for a little manual clitoral stimulation - though the doctors called it ‘pelvic massage’. Finally in 1890 vibrators became available for home purchase.

1928

In 1928, companies began to market vibrators as beauty and weight loss aids.

2000

Since then, sex toys have evolved big time. The Noughties hailed the invention of a dildo you can put your dead lover’s ashes in, the sex selfie stick and a 24-karat gold dildo. Now we have Crescendo, a sex toy that lets you order bespoke vibrations via an app on your phone.
